What kind of watch this is
Steve Lightfoot’s 2017 series takes the comic book template and strips away the color. Jon Bernthal plays Frank Castle, a former Marine whose grief curdles into a very specific kind of violence. The tone is muddy, loud, and unapologetically grim. You get 23 hours of that, split across two seasons. It is less a superhero story and more a war film that forgot to leave the base. The conspiracy digs deeper than the initial tragedy, pulling Castle into a military labyrinth he cannot simply shoot his way out of. It is heavy, but it does not waste your time.
What the critics said
Critics treated the first season like a rough draft that found its footing. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 68% approval rating, averaging 6.8 out of 10 from 82 reviews. The consensus notes the show pushes the boundaries of Marvel’s TV universe. Metacritic scores it 55 out of 100, calling the reception mixed. The second season dipped slightly to 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average of 6.7 from 38 reviews. Metacritic bumped its score to 58. Reviewers enjoyed the action but found Frank Castle’s portrayal underwhelming.
