What kind of watch this is
Arrow is a vigilante drama where a billionaire plays at being a street-level archer for 8 seasons. The hook is simple: a man with a bow tries to fix a broken city, and the show agrees to let him have 119 hours to do it. It is a long, loud commitment that treats its own mythology with a strange, unshakeable confidence. The tone swings between brooding noir and campy spectacle, never quite settling on which one it is. It is for people who like their heroes to dress in tactical gear and complain about their trauma for 5 years.
What the critics said
The first season landed with an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 36 reviews. Metacritic gave it 73 out of 100, a score that made it the highest-rated CW show in five years. The consensus called it a strong entry with cinematic action. Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times saw an interesting setup with a quality look. Not everyone was sold. Brian Lowry at Variety called it a handsome but stiff surrogate for Batman.
Season two climbed to a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, backed by 12 reviews. Critics praised the action and the cast. Jeff Jensen of Entertainment Weekly noted the writing was adult and witty. The A.V. Club’s Carrie Raisler gave it an A−, saying it respected its characters.
Season three started well but wobbled. Critics found the flashbacks sporadic and the villain shallow. It was a reminder that even good shows can trip over their own mythology.
How it did with audiences
In the United States, the premiere drew 4.14 million viewers. That made it The CW’s most-watched telecast of any night in three years. It was also the network’s biggest series debut since The Vampire Diaries in 2009. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Stephen Amell arrived from Heartland and Private Practice, then left for The Flash and Code 8. David Ramsey came off Dexter and Con Air, later joining The Flash again. The cast moved in similar directions, though the credits cannot say the show caused that shift. They can only map the paths that followed.
