What kind of watch this is

Damon Lindelof’s 2019 series takes the comic’s alternate history and shoves it into Tulsa, Oklahoma, 34 years later. It runs 9 hours total, a manageable block of time for a story that treats vigilantes as outlaws and white supremacists as copycats. The tone is heavy, leaning into the mystery of how a false alien attack reshaped global politics. The nostalgia is there, but it serves the present, not the past.

What the critics said

Critics loved it. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 96% rating based on 408 reviews, averaging 8.6/10. Metacritic scores it 85 out of 100, signaling universal acclaim. The consensus calls it bold and bristling, building on its source material with complex characters. It is not always easy viewing, but it creates an impressive identity of its own.

The audience score sits lower, a discrepancy several outlets attribute to review bombing. Esquire’s Matt Miller alleged that far-right trolls artificially deflated the metric. The core complaint involves the Seventh Kavalry adopting the Rorschach image. Damon Lindelof countered that the character has been dead for over 30 years and cannot clarify the misinterpretation. Patrick Wilson, who played Nite Owl in the 2009 film, said he wound up loving the series.

Awards

The series took home 20 awards. That includes Regina King for lead actress, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for supporting actor, and Gregory Middleton for cinematography. The Primetime Emmys gave it 11 trophies, topping the 2019–20 season with 26 nominations.

What came next for the cast

Regina King moved from The Big Bang Theory and Enemy of the State to The Harder They Fall and Caught Stealing. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stepped away from Aquaman and The Greatest Showman, later appearing in The Matrix Resurrections, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Jeremy Irons left Batman v Superman and Justice League to return for Zack Snyder's Justice League, The Flash, and The Beekeeper. Jean Smart exited The Accountant and A Simple Favor for Babylon, Mare of Easttown, and Superintelligence. These shifts mark a pivot rather than a cause.

Where it left its mark

The series found a lane few others could afford to walk. It brought the 1921 Tulsa race massacre into sharp focus, a history historians had long documented but filmmakers struggled to fund. DeNeen Brown of The Washington Post called the show a catalyst, noting how it sparked a wave of related documentaries and depictions ahead of the event's centennial. That ripple effect pushed the narrative into mainstream view. The New York Times later ranked it 39th among the 21st century's best TV shows, a ballot drawn from over 500 industry professionals. It proved that difficult history can still find an audience.
