What kind of watch this is

The 2009 action film runs 107 minutes, a duration that feels both too long and not quite enough. Gavin Hood directs Hugh Jackman through a history that spans two centuries, culminating in the Weapon X program. The tone is loud, fast, and unapologetic about its own excess. It treats the origin story as a vehicle for spectacle rather than character study. You will either find the energy infectious or the pacing exhausting. There is no middle ground here. It is a loud room where everyone is shouting about their past.

What the critics said

Critics found the film more tired than thrilling. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 37%, while Metacritic lands on 40 out of 100. That is a polite way of saying "mixed or average."

Roger Ebert asked why anyone should care about a man who feels no pain, noting he is essentially a story device for action sequences. Richard Corliss called it an O.K. Marvel movie that tries to couple the early story with the known trilogy.

Jackman gave his all, but the script was cliche-ridden.

How it did with audiences

It opened to an estimated $35 million on its first day, a figure that placed it 16th among the highest-grossing opening days ever. That translated to $85 million for the weekend, landing it at number 1. Globally, it collected $373 million. Critics were not kind, but the audience clearly decided the ticket was worth the risk. On TMDB, users rate it 6.3 out of 10. The math worked out, even if the reviews did not.

What came next for the cast

Hugh Jackman carried the weight of X-Men (2000) and The Prestige (2006) into this role, emerging with Prisoners (2013) and Logan (2017). Liev Schreiber traded the Scream (1996) franchise for Spotlight (2015). Danny Huston moved from The Aviator (2004) to Game Night (2018). Lynn Collins stepped out of 50 First Dates (2004) toward The Walking Dead (2010). The credits show a trajectory. They do not prove causality. Sometimes a film is just a door.
