What kind of watch this is
James Gunn directed this 150-minute science fiction adventure, and the tagline "Once more with feeling" does the heavy lifting for the tone. It is loud, chaotic, and deeply sentimental all at once. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista return to protect a team member, a mission that threatens to dismantle the group itself. The film leans into the grief of losing Gamora, letting that pain drive the action rather than just decorating it. It is less a sequel and more a eulogy with explosions.

Critics mostly liked it, though with some reservations. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 82% approval rating as of August 2024, while Metacritic gives it a 64 out of 100. The consensus describes it as a "galactic group hug" that squeezes a little too tight. Not everyone agreed on the execution. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian and Nicholas Barber of the BBC called it overlong. Barber noted that Gunn was allowed to "pour out his emotions," which is either a strength or a liability, depending on how much you want to feel.

It cost $250 million and took in $846 million worldwide, a sum that Deadline Hollywood pegs as a $124 million net profit. In the United States and Canada, it grossed $359 million. The film held the top box office spot for its second weekend, a 48% decline that marked the best hold of any MCU sequel. On TMDB, users rate it 7.9 out of 10. Audiences stayed, even when the numbers dipped.

The ensemble arrived heavy on franchise momentum. Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista both logged Avengers: Infinity War before the final chapter. Afterward, the credits shifted. Pratt moved into The Electric State and Mercy. Bautista traded spaceships for Dune: Part Two and The Naked Gun. Zoe Saldaña stepped into Avatar: Fire and Ash and Emilia Pérez. Karen Gillan found room in The Life of Chuck and Sleeping Dogs. The timeline does not prove one film rewrote the others. It just shows where the pieces landed.
