Iron Man 2 (2010)

What kind of watch this is
Iron Man 2 is a 124-minute action film where the hero is already famous and therefore already tired. Jon Favreau directs a story about a man who cannot stop tinkering with his own legacy while the world demands he share it. The armor is still the star, but the friction comes from the man inside it. It is less about saving the planet and more about the specific, exhausting weight of being a public figure who also happens to be a god. The stakes are personal before they are global. It works best when you stop looking for a new origin story and just watch a guy argue with his own conscience.
What the critics said
Critics rated the sequel solidly, if not exceptionally. Rotten Tomatoes tallied 72% positive reviews from 299 critics as of June 2026, averaging 6.6 out of 10. Metacritic landed on 57 out of 100 based on 40 reviews, a score that signals mixed reception. Roger Ebert awarded 3 out of 4 stars, calling it "a polished, high-octane sequel." He noted it builds on Downey's quirky performance, even if it isn't as good as the original. Not everyone was so forgiving. Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter argued the first film's fun "has vanished," replaced by noise and confusion. The consensus is clear: it works, but it doesn't break new ground.
How it did with audiences
It cost around $170 million to make and another $150 million to push, landing $624 million at the worldwide box office. That margin is enough to keep the lights on in Burbank. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. Audiences did the math, and it came out even.
Awards
Iron Man 2 collected 7 wins from 44 nominations. The Hollywood Film Awards gave Janek Sirrs Visual Effects of the Year, while John Debney took the Film and Television Music Award for Top Box Office Films. Mickey Rourke won the Scream Award for Best Villain. The film also claimed the Golden Schmoes for Biggest Disappointment of the Year. High effort, mixed reception.
What came next for the cast
Robert Downey Jr. moved from Sherlock Holmes to The Avengers. Gwyneth Paltrow stepped out of Se7en into the same lineup. Don Cheadle left the Ocean’s franchise behind for Age of Ultron. The credits cannot say this film caused that shift. They only map the path.
