What kind of watch this is

James Mangold directs Hugh Jackman in a 126-minute action science fiction adventure set in modern-day Japan. The film centers on a character whose most dangerous moments arrive when he is most vulnerable. It follows a life-changing voyage that tests physical, emotional, and mortal limits against an ultimate nemesis. Hiroyuki Sanada and Tao Okamoto round out the cast. The premise is simple: a powerful figure goes to a foreign land to face the one thing that might actually stop him. It is a high-stakes test of endurance.

What the critics said

Critics leaned positive, though not unanimously. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 71% approval rating based on 259 reviews, with an average score of 6.3/10 as of May 2022. Metacritic sits at 61 out of 100, which it labels generally favorable. The consensus notes the film stays true to the source material despite a chaotic final act. Peter Debruge of Variety called it an entertaining and surprisingly existential digression. Henry Barnes of The Guardian was less charmed, finding the action duller and flatter. Jackman’s performance drew consistent praise, even when the CGI did not.

How it did with audiences

It pulled in $415 million worldwide. That is a respectable haul, though the domestic take of $133 million sat roughly $45.1 million below the franchise average. On TMDB, users give it a 6.4 out of 10. The numbers are fine. The reviews were less so.

What came next for the cast

Hugh Jackman moved from The Prestige to Logan. Hiroyuki Sanada stepped out of The Last Samurai into Avengers: Endgame. Rila Fukushima left Arrow for Ghost in the Shell. The jump from period drama to superhero spectacle is a strange trajectory. Credits list what followed; they do not prove causation.

Where it left its mark

Fox moved fast after the release. Jackman and Mangold began talks for another film, with Mangold scheduled to write the treatment. The studio announced the sequel for March 2017. Critics later called it the most underrated superhero movie. Alex Wench of Inverse argued it stands as one of the most contemplative entries, digging deep into the character’s mind. He called it the perfect lead-in to Logan, noting how that film perfected what they didn’t get right here. Entertainment Weekly ranked it ninth in the X-Men series, praising its mournful sincerity. They said the action feels uniquely gravitational in a franchise usually defined by green screen.
