What kind of watch this is
Peyton Reed returns for a 125-minute leap into the subatomic. The family unit, now including Hank Pym and Janet, dives into the Quantum Realm to interact with strange new creatures. It is a spectacle built on particles and portals, trading the grounded heist vibe of the first film for cosmic weirdness. Paul Rudd keeps the bickering alive while the stakes spiral out of control. It is a loud, colorful detour that asks you to suspend disbelief about the size of things.
What the critics said
The critics were lukewarm, which is a specific kind of cold. Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 46% approval rating as of January 2026, with an average score of 5.5/10. Metacritic settled on 48 out of 100 in July 2023, a number that suggests the film is neither a disaster nor a triumph. The consensus, such as it is, hinged on Jonathan Majors. Owen Gleiberman of Variety called the result "at once fun and numbing." Caryn James of the BBC argued the movie has "nothing to offer beyond drab-looking action." The cast carried the weight; the script let them down.
How it did with audiences
It cost $200 million, or at least that is what the initial reports said. The actual production budget was $388.4 million. The film grossed $215 million in the United States and $476 million worldwide. That total fell short of the $600 million break-even point. Audiences on IMDb gave it a 6.0/10 score as of February 2026. TMDB users rate it 6.2.
