The gap suggests the film is fun but not profound. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called the result "irresistibly tasty again," a compliment that implies the ingredients were familiar. A. O. Scott of The New York Times saw "grinding, hectic emptiness" instead. He wasn't alone in finding the genre's cynicism bloated.
