What kind of watch this is

Nia DaCosta directs a 105-minute film where a wormhole links Carol’s powers to those of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau. They possess powers that entangle. It is a hard sell to group a superhero, an astronaut, and a fan in one room. The film leans into that friction. Their chemistry is the real engine, driving the spectacle forward. If you expect them to harmonize instantly, you will be surprised by the noise.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 62% approval rating as of August 2024, while Metacritic assigns a 50 out of 100, signaling mixed or average reviews. The consensus notes the film is funny and brief, elevated by lead chemistry, despite a cluttered story. Critics disagreed on the execution. Lovia Gyarkye called the direction "kinetic," but Christy Lemire labeled it "terrible." Performances, however, drew consistent praise. Peter Bradshaw described the trio as an "entertaining intergalactic ensemble.

How it did with audiences

The Marvels spent $220 million and took in $206 million worldwide. In accounting terms, that is a loss. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net loss at $237 million. It is the lowest-grossing film in the MCU franchise, falling short of its break-even point. Yet it became the highest-grossing film directed by a Black woman. Audiences seemed to sense the disconnect. On TMDB, users rate it 5.9 out of 10. IMDb users gave it 5.5 out of 10 as of February 2026. The numbers suggest a fan base that showed up, then quietly left.

What came next for the cast

Teyonah Parris arrived with WandaVision and Candyman under her belt. She left with Matchbox the Movie. Samuel L. Jackson had already conquered Pulp Fiction and The Avengers. He followed that with Argylle, Damaged, and Afterburn. The timeline does not prove The Marvels caused the shift. It only marks the point where their paths diverged again.
