What kind of watch this is

Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up is a 167-minute epic. It asks what you would sacrifice to stop a prophecy you can see coming but cannot stop. The scale is overwhelming, and the visuals are designed to induce a specific type of awe. It is a film that respects your intelligence enough to let you sit with the weight of its choices. You will either find it transcendent or exhausting.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 92% as of May 2024. Metacritic gives it 79 out of 100, a solid but not transcendent mark. Critics praised the ensemble cast, with The Washington Post noting Villeneuve’s “brilliant job of casting.” The American Film Institute called it a top ten film of 2024, arguing it “unleashes all the powers of the art form.” Not everyone agreed on the lead. Chalamet’s performance drew mixed reactions, ranging from flat to career-best. Some found the climax lacking in momentum. It is a film that trusts you to keep up, which is a nice change of pace.

How it did with audiences

The film spent $190 million and collected $715 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2024. That total included $282.7 million from North America and $432.7 million from overseas markets. IMAX screenings accounted for roughly $145 million of the haul. Deadline Hollywood estimated a net profit of $184.3 million after deducting all costs. Audiences rewarded the gamble, with an IMDb weighted average of 8.4/10 as of February 2026.
