What kind of watch this is
Revenge of the Sith is the 2005 sci-fi action film where the Republic crumbles and the Galactic Empire rises from its ashes. George Lucas directs a 140-minute story about Anakin Skywalker choosing a side as the Sith unveil a plot to rule the galaxy. The tagline suggests every saga has an end, which is a bold claim for a movie that takes two hours to get to the punchline. It runs long, but the fall of a hero is hard to rush.
What the critics said
Critics generally warmed to the prequel trilogy’s finale, though they noted it still stumbles. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 79% approval rating and a 7.4/10 average as of May 2026. Metacritic lands on 68 out of 100, signaling generally favorable reviews. A.O. Scott called it "the best of the four episodes Mr. Lucas has directed." Roger Ebert agreed it was a "great entertainment" but found the dialogue weak. That last point is where the praise runs out; writing is a hard skill to fake, even with a lightsaber.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $113 million. The worldwide gross hit $850 million, or $906 million depending on which ledger you trust. That makes it the second-highest-grossing film of 2005, trailing only Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It broke four box office records in a single day, including the highest Thursday opening. IMDb users rate it 7.7 out of 10 as of March 2026. TMDB users give it a 7.5. The numbers are loud.
What came next for the cast
Natalie Portman moved from Léon to Avengers: Endgame, a jump that defies simple career mapping. Ian McDiarmid returned to the franchise years later, while Ewan McGregor drifted toward Disney remakes and action sequels. Hayden Christensen vanished into action thrillers and medical dramas. The credits cannot say Revenge of the Sith caused that. They can only mark where the paths diverged.
