What kind of watch this is
Sam Raimi directs this 139-minute action adventure, which asks what happens when a superhero gets too strong. Peter Parker’s powers are hijacked by an alien organism, turning his heroism into a darker, more aggressive force. The tagline claims the greatest battle lies within, a promise that defines the film’s internal focus. It pits a changed Spider-Man against a new cast of villains, including the shape-shifting Sandman, while Peter navigates a messy love triangle and a nemesis named Eddie Brock. The movie runs long for a single character study, but it uses that runtime to watch a hero slowly lose himself.
What the critics said
The critics were divided, which is polite for a movie that was clearly trying to do too much. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 62% approval as of September 2026, with an average rating of 6.5/10. Metacritic lands on 59 out of 100, a score it files under mixed or average. The official consensus notes that while the action still dazzles, the film isn’t quite as refined as its predecessors.
David Edelstein of New York magazine argued the villains weren't as compelling as Doctor Octopus. Anthony Lane of The New Yorker called it a "shambles". The critics saw a film with more characters and plotlines than it could handle, a common complaint when the script tries to hold three villains at once.
How it did with audiences
$258 million in, $891 million out. The math checks out, even if the plot didn’t quite. In the U.S., it pulled in $337 million, riding a $151.1 million opening weekend that set records for the day, the weekend, and the IMAX screen. It held the top spot for two weeks before Shrek the Third bumped it aside. Audiences on TMDB rate it 6.5. A blockbuster that spent its first two weeks proving it was the biggest movie of the year, then quietly admitted the script was a rough draft.
