Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth. Not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.

What kind of watch this is
Neill Blomkamp directed this 112-minute science fiction film, which strips the alien invasion genre of its usual heroics. Instead of space battles, it offers a gritty, handheld look at bureaucratic neglect in a South African slum. The tagline, "You are not welcome here," sets the tone for a story where the refugees are treated as pests rather than people. Sharlto Copley plays a field agent who gets infected by a virus that starts rewriting his biology. It is a cold, dirty look at how institutions dehumanize the other.
What the critics said
Critics leaned hard on the technical side. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 90% approval rating as of August 2024, while Metacritic sits at 81. The consensus calls it technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching. Sara Vilkomerson of The New York Observer called it the most exciting science fiction movie in ages. Not everyone bought the hype. Roger Ebert gave it three stars, noting that the third act relies on standard shoot-out action and avoids the higher realms of the genre.
How it did with audiences
$30 million in, $211 million out. That’s a 7x return, which in Hollywood arithmetic is a solid win, not a miracle. It opened to $37.4 million in the U.S. and Canada, ranking first at the weekend box office. The audience was 64% male and 57% over 25. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
The cast list reads like a before-and-after photo. Jason Cope was in Doomsday, then Dredd and Chappie followed. It is tempting to blame the film for that trajectory. The credits just note the sequence. Nathalie Boltt moved from Doomsday to Riverdale and later Demonic. Sylvaine Strike had one credit, Ali, before Resort to Love. The gaps are wide. The timeline does not offer a causal link, only a sequence.
