What kind of watch this is
Neill Blomkamp directs Chappie, a 120-minute crime action sci-fi film. The premise is simple: a robot child is born into a world that treats him as property. Sharlto Copley plays the machine, Dev Patel plays the scientist who creates him, and Hugh Jackman plays the cop who wants to control him. The movie asks if a mindless object can learn to feel, or if it just learns to be dangerous. It is loud, fast, and arguably a bit too eager to prove its own heart.
What the critics said
The numbers are unkind. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 32% as of October 2024, while the average user rating is a 4.9 from October 2021. Metacritic lands on 41 out of 100, a score that signals mixed or average reviews. Critics noted the visual flair but questioned the narrative logic. Justin Chang of Variety called the result "clunky and confused." Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times found it "cartoonish and preposterous." Not everyone agreed. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle gave it three stars, arguing that Blomkamp is doing interesting things. It is a mess, but a messy one with a pulse.
How it did with audiences
Chappie cost $49 million to make. It grossed $105 million. That’s a healthy margin, though not a blockbuster. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10. The audience vote is middling, which fits a film that asks you to care about a robot with no name. The numbers are fine. The soul is debatable.
What came next for the cast
Hugh Jackman arrived from X-Men: Days of Future Past and left with Logan. That is a specific kind of bookend. Sharlto Copley traded District 9 for Free Fire, a move that feels less like a career arc and more like a lateral slide into denser territory. Dev Patel walked out of Slumdog Millionaire and into Lion, swapping one broken world for another. The credits list what happened next. They do not explain why.
