What kind of watch this is
Drew Goddard’s 2015 series strips the superhero genre down to wet pavement, concrete, and the sound of a man punching a wall. It is a crime drama first, where the cape is just a disguise for a guy who works in Hell’s Kitchen. Charlie Cox plays Matt Murdock with a weary physicality that makes the 35-hour run feel like a long, bruising night rather than a marathon. The tagline tells you not to fear the dark. It works because the darkness is the point.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed that the first season nailed the tone. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 99% approval rating based on 72 reviews, while Metacritic settled on 75 out of 100. The consensus praised its adherence to the source material and gritty procedural feel. Season two dipped slightly to 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and 68 on Metacritic, though critics still found it generally favorable. Season three climbed back to 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and 71 on Metacritic, aided by the return of the Kingpin. In 2026, Casey Loving of TheWrap called the season three hallway fight "nothing short of magic," noting each season was "only as good as its hallway fight.
How it did with audiences
TMDB users give it an 8.2 out of 10. Netflix never released total viewership numbers, so the metric remains a mystery wrapped in a mystery. What the data did show was a specific path: audiences often started with Jessica Jones before moving to Daredevil. They watched the Marvel slate in the order of their own curiosity, not the release calendar. Todd Yellin called it watching "in order of how they're interested in them." Social media buzz peaked at the first premiere, then cooled off.
