What kind of watch this is

Michael Bay directs this 154-minute entry, where Cade Yeager and Bumblebee team up with an English Lord and an Oxford Professor. The premise is simple: Optimus Prime is gone, and the key to saving the future lies in the buried history of Transformers on Earth. It is a film that treats the concept of hidden history as a literal treasure map. You will spend two and a half hours watching a man in a suit talk to a robot in a castle.

What the critics said

The reception was not subtle. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 16% approval, the lowest in the series, with an average rating of 3.5/10. Metacritic scores it 27/100, which it defines as generally unfavorable. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave it zero stars, a rating he applied consistently to the franchise. He called it an abomination that makes other summer misfires look like masterpieces. Emily Yoshida of Vulture found it barely coherent but more fun than its predecessor, a distinction that might comfort you, or just make you more confused.

How it did with audiences

The film cost between $217 million and $260 million to make. It took in $605 million worldwide, with $130 million coming from the United States. In studio math, that gap counts as a significant loss, reportedly costing Paramount over $100 million. Audiences rated it 6.1 on TMDB.
