What kind of watch this is

Rise of the Beasts treats the Transformers franchise like a giant toy chest that someone finally organized. Steven Caple Jr. directs a 127-minute action film where the robots have actual lines, not just grunts. Peter Cullen is back as Optimus Prime, which is the only reason to press play. It is a loud, colorful entry in a loud, colorful series. You do not need to know the lore to enjoy the explosions.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 51%, a number that feels oddly specific for a film about giant robots. Metacritic is less generous, landing on 42 out of 100. Critics split on whether the human drama saves the spectacle. Matt Donato of IGN called it proof the series is accelerating in the right direction. Graeme Guttmann of Screen Rant saw mostly generic parts overshadowing the bright spots. It is a movie that knows it is a movie, which is either charming or exhausting.

How it did with audiences

The studio bet $195 million on a machine that would barely pay for itself. Rise of the Beasts pulled in $157 million domestically and $284 million abroad, landing a $442 million worldwide total that left the franchise’s wallet looking thinner than expected. It became the lowest-grossing installment in the series, a distinction no one asks for. On TMDB, users give it a 7.2 out of 10.
