What kind of watch this is
Kenneth Branagh directs Thor, a 2011 adventure about a god who thinks he is ready for power. He is not. Odin casts him out to Earth as punishment. The film runs 115 minutes, enough time for an arrogant warrior to bump into a few humans and realize he is not the center of the universe. It is loud, earnest, and unapologetic about its scale. You do not need to care about Norse mythology to follow it, but you do need to tolerate a hero who learns humility through exile.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes settles on 77% approval, with an average review score of 6.7/10. Metacritic, less enthusiastic, assigns a 57/100 Metascore, which it labels mixed or average. Audiences polled by CinemaScore awarded it a B+. The consensus leans positive, citing wit and human drama. Richard Kuipers of Variety noted the film delivers goods while butt is being kicked, but loses thrill during the banishment on Earth. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times disagreed, calling it a failure as a movie but a success as marketing.
How it did with audiences
Thor cost $150 million and took in $449 million worldwide. In film terms, that is a healthy margin. In other industries, it is a very good year. It ranked as the 15th highest-grossing film of 2011. Audiences on TMDB give it a 6.8 score.
Awards
Thor picked up 6 awards from 22 nominations. Patrick Doyle took home the Film and Television Music Award for Top Box Office Films, plus a theme prize. Alexandra Byrne won for costume, Tom Hiddleston for Best Male Newcomer, and Kylie Furneaux for stunts. The film also collected an Empire Award for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy. It is rare for a superhero movie to get this much love from costume and stunt categories.
