What kind of watch this is
James DeMonaco’s 2013 thriller builds a night where violence is legal and a family locks its doors. It runs 85 minutes, a tight window for a story about paranoia in a safe house. The reception was lukewarm at best. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 39% approval rating as of June 2022, with an average score of 5.2/10. Metacritic assigns it a 41/100 Metascore as of October 2025, a range that suggests mixed or average reviews. The consensus on RT notes the film tries to make an intelligent point but devolves into numbing violence. Charlie Jane Anders called it a clunky political screed. Entertainment Weekly gave it a B−, noting it has a lot on its mind but never expresses it. Gary Wolcott was less diplomatic, calling it almost the dumbest movie in history.

The film cost $3 million to make and returned $89 million at the box office. That ratio sits comfortably in the realm of profitable, though perhaps less so in the realm of artistic consensus. On TMDB, users rate it 6.2 out of 10.
