Seventeen years after choosing not to kill the man who killed his son, former police sergeant Leo Barnes has become head of security for Senator Charlene Roan, the front runner in the next Presidential election due to her vow to eliminate the Purge. On the night of what should be the final Purge, a betrayal from within the government forces Barnes and Roan out onto the street where they must fight to survive the night.

The Purge: Election Year is a 109-minute political thriller where a security chief and a senator have to survive the night they are trying to end. Director James DeMonaco takes the franchise’s home invasion premise and scales it up to a national crisis. The tagline reads "Keep America great," which sets the tone for a film that treats civic duty as a blood sport. It runs long for a movie that is mostly people running from other people. The stakes are high, but the logic is low.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 55% based on 165 reviews, a figure that suggests the film is neither a hit nor a miss. Metacritic agrees, landing on a 55 out of 100. A.O. Scott of The New York Times called it a blend of aggression, release, and relief that takes itself just seriously enough. Alan Zilberman of The Washington Post was less amused, noting that even the director seems bored by the sieges. The consensus calls it a nastily effective diversion.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $10 million to make. It took in $79.2 million in North America and $39.4 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $118.6 million. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit at $44.8 million. That is a healthy margin for a movie about a night when murder is legal. On TMDB, users rate it 6.4 out of 10. The score is modest, but the arithmetic is not.

Elizabeth Mitchell traded sci-fi leads for a beach drama. Frank Grillo went from MCU sidekick to DC hero. Mykelti Williamson stayed in crime procedural lanes. Betty Gabriel jumped from indie drama to mainstream blockbusters. The credits show a shift. They do not prove this film caused it.
