The Mummy (1999)
The sands will rise. The heavens will part. The power will be unleashed.
Dashing legionnaire Rick O'Connell stumbles upon the hidden ruins of Hamunaptra while in the midst of a battle to claim the area in 1920s Egypt. It has been over three thousand years since former High Priest Imhotep suffered a fate worse than death as a punishment for a forbidden love—along with a curse that guarantees eternal doom upon the world if he is ever awoken.

What kind of watch this is
Stephen Sommers directed The Mummy in 1999, and it runs 124 minutes. It is an adventure that leans heavily on spectacle, featuring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah. The tagline promises rising sands and parted heavens, and the movie delivers on that promise without hesitation. It is the kind of movie that asks you to suspend disbelief for a very long time. You will either love the commitment or find it exhausting.
What the critics said
Critics found it fun, if not profound. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 63% Tomatometer score as of February 2026. Metacritic lands on 48 out of 100. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote that he was "cheered by nearly every minute" despite finding little to praise in the script. Others saw a breezy crowd-pleaser that leans on its effects. Keith Phipps of The A.V. Club found the Indiana Jones-inspired action "forced." The cast generally got a pass, selling material that might otherwise have felt too silly to believe.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $80 million. The worldwide gross hit $416 million. In Hollywood terms, that is a hit. In other industries, it is a solid quarter. On TMDB, users give it a 7 out of 10. IMDb rates it 7.1/10 as of April 2026. The math works out.
