What kind of watch this is
The Mummy Returns is a 2001 adventure film that swaps desert grit for high-octane spectacle. It runs 130 minutes and leans heavily on the kinetic energy of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who play a family unit tested by a resurrected ancient enemy. The sequel expands the mythology, introducing a scorpion king and an army of the dead, all while keeping the tone light enough for an 8-year-old protagonist. It is less about atmospheric dread and more about the sheer volume of things trying to kill the hero. If the first film was a puzzle, this one is a brawl.
What the critics said
The reviews landed in that uncomfortable middle ground where nobody wants to be. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 46% as of August 2024, a number that suggests more than half the critics walked away shrugging. Metacritic is slightly more generous at 48, which it files under mixed or average. Roger Ebert dropped his rating from three stars for the first film to two, noting the plot serves only as a clothesline for effects. James Berardinelli called it hollow, though not unpleasant. Kenneth Turan saw a different movie, praising its cheeky sensibility. The consensus is that the CGI outshined the people, a trade-off that leaves the characters feeling like props.
How it did with audiences
The Mummy Returns cost $98 million and took in $433 million worldwide. That’s a solid return, though not quite the double of its cost. It opened with $68.1 million, the second-highest weekend of its time behind The Lost World: Jurassic Park. On TMDB, users give it a 6.4 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Brendan Fraser traded jungle gags for tomb raids, then spent years in sequels before a belated turn in The Whale. Rachel Weisz kept an eclectic streak, drifting from Constantine to The Lobster. John Hannah jumped from wedding vows to Spartacus and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Oded Fehr found a franchise in Resident Evil. Credits list what followed, not what caused it. The timeline is a map, not a verdict.
