What kind of watch this is

Gore Verbinski’s 2006 film swaps the tight heist structure of the first film for a sprawling, two-hour chase. Jack Sparrow owes his soul to Davy Jones, the Ruler of the Ocean Depths, and must find the ghastly captain’s still-beating heart to escape eternal servitude aboard the Flying Dutchman. Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are drawn back into the perilous quest, though they are also aiming to evade execution for aiding a pirate. The movie is 151 minutes long, which gives plenty of room for sea monsters and increasingly large explosions. It is a film that leans heavily into its own over-the-top fun.

What the critics said

The reception is mid, which is a rare place for a blockbuster to land. Rotten Tomatoes records a 53% approval rating as of January 2026, alongside a 6/10 average. Metacritic aligns at 53 out of 100, filing it under mixed or average. It is not a triumph, but it is not a disaster.

Drew McWeeny compared it to The Empire Strikes Back, praising the darkness of the Flying Dutchman. Christy Lemire of the Associated Press called it "a live-action version of a Road Runner-Wile E. Coyote extravaganza." Some reviewers even mistook the CGI Davy Jones for prosthetic makeup. It is fun, provided you ignore the math.

How it did with audiences

It cost $225 million and took in $1.1 billion worldwide, a feat that made it the highest-grossing film of 2006. In the United States, it earned $423 million. That speed to the billion mark was a record at the time, though many films have since passed it. Audiences on TMDB rate it 7.4 out of 10.
