What kind of watch this is
Alex Kurtzman’s 2017 film runs 110 minutes. The hook is not the monster, but the machinery that digs her up and fails to contain her. It is a movie about how modern institutions handle ancient things: with branding, bad decisions, and insufficient security. The tone is loud and slightly self-aware, leaning into the absurdity of corporate greed meeting myth. It is a film that knows it is a franchise reboot and plays it straight anyway.
What the critics said
Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes, as of October 2024, shows a 15% approval rating. Metacritic, as of February 2024, lands on a 34 Metascore, a zone it labels generally unfavorable. The consensus? It lacks the campy fun of its predecessors. David Ehrlich of IndieWire called it the worst film of Cruise's career, arguing it exploits rather than honors old Hollywood. That is a harsh verdict, but consistent with the 15% score.
How it did with audiences
The budget hit $125 million, but the combined production and marketing cost swelled to $345 million. It grossed $409 million worldwide, falling short of the $450 million needed to break even. The studio took a hit of $60–95 million. On TMDB, users score it 5.5 out of 10. Audiences voted with their wallets, and the math did not work out.
What came next for the cast
Tom Cruise returned to the franchise that made him a household name with Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Sofia Boutella moved from Star Trek Beyond in 2016 to Rebel Moon in 2023. Jake Johnson swapped Jurassic World in 2015 for a quieter turn in Self Reliance in 2024. Annabelle Wallis went from Peaky Blinders to Tag in 2018.
