What kind of watch this is
The Last Ship trades the usual zombie apocalypse tropes for a naval thriller with a very literal interpretation of "containment." Five seasons and 56 episodes amount to roughly 38 hours of watching a crew of 218 people on a guided missile destroyer try to keep a virus from exiting the hull. It is less about saving the world and more about the specific, bureaucratic nightmare of doing so while confined to a metal tube in the ocean. The tagline, "Whatever you do, don't breathe," is not a metaphor. It is a safety protocol.
What the critics said
Metacritic assigns the first season a 60 out of 100, a score that 22 critics average into "generally favorable" territory. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 83% across the five seasons. The consensus notes that movie-sized action and a pretty cast provide smooth sailing, even if the plot treads familiar ground. Entertainment Weekly’s Ray Abdur Rahman found the second season’s depiction of a pandemic-ravaged US increasingly interesting.
How it did with audiences
The box office figures remain empty, which usually signals a film that flew under the radar or simply didn't break the bank. With no budget to compare against, the financial narrative stays quiet. TMDB users rate it 6.9 out of 10. That is a solid, unpretentious mark. It suggests a movie you watch once, enjoy the ride, and then let go.
