Falling Skies opens in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force.

What kind of watch this is
Falling Skies is a 2011 sci-fi drama where the apocalypse happens on a Tuesday and the paperwork takes six months. Created by Robert Rodat, it follows a group of citizen soldiers who have traded their jobs for rifles. The tone is relentless, blending high-stakes action with the grinding exhaustion of holding a line against an occupying force. It is 52 episodes long, which is 52 hours of watching people try to keep the lights on in a dark world. That is a lot of time to spend wondering if the coffee will run out before the aliens do.
What the critics said
Critics generally liked the first season, finding the pacing right. Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter noted that the suspense makes you want to devour the next episode immediately. Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+, calling it an engaging, if derivative, chunk of dystopian sci-fi. Not everyone was convinced. Brian Lowry of Variety found the soapier elements mostly fall flat, labeling the series painfully old-fashioned. The second season drew more praise. Maureen Ryan of The Huffington Post called it a leaner, meaner machine than its predecessor. It is a show that works best when you ignore how derivative it feels.
