What kind of watch this is
Todd Phillips directed this 102-minute comedy, which takes the group from the first film and drops them in Bangkok. Stu wants a quiet brunch before his wedding, but the group has other plans. The tagline is "The wolfpack is back," which feels less like a promise and more like a threat to the local police. It is loud, chaotic, and strangely committed to the bit. If you liked the first one, this is the same engine with a bigger fuel tank.
What the critics said
Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 34% as of 2024, with an average score of 5/10. Metacritic lands on 44 out of 100, a score it files under "Mixed or Average". Andrew Barker of Variety called it "a faded copy of its predecessor". Christy Lemire of the Associated Press asked if it was "lazy? Arrogant?" Roger Ebert gave it two stars, noting it plays like a challenge to the audience's capacity for raunchiness. Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter found it still worth the trip, even if Bangkok was less fun than Vegas.
How it did with audiences
The Hangover Part II cost $80 million and took in $587 million worldwide. That margin counts as a solid return in any business, though perhaps less so in Hollywood. It earned $177.8 million in its opening weekend, a record for a comedy’s worldwide start. By mid-June 2011, it had out-earned the first film to claim the top spot for R-rated comedies. Audiences on TMDB rate it 6.5, a score that suggests the hangover faded before the credits rolled.
