Andy Muschietti directs a 144-minute film where Barry Allen’s attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future. General Zod has returned, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. It is a loud, neon-soaked adventure that cares more about spectacle than plot logic. The pacing is frantic, treating the source material like a comic book page rather than a character study. If you want to see what happens when you mix quantum physics with superhero tropes without any restraint, this is the movie.
What the critics said
The reviews landed in the middle, which is rarely a comfort. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 63% as of February 2024, with an average rating of 6.3 out of 10. Metacritic gives it 55 out of 100 as of February 2026, filing it under mixed or average. Critics liked the humor and the pace. They disliked the third act and the effects. Rolling Stone’s David Fear called it the best DCEU film but noted the production was complicated. He said, "It is not what we'll talk about when we talk about Ezra Miller.
How it did with audiences
The Flash cost $220 million and took in $271 million. In superhero accounting, that is a near miss. In any other industry, it is a loss that requires a meeting. TMDB users give it a 6.6. It is a film that did its job, just not the job the spreadsheet wanted.
What came next for the cast
Keaton’s credits shifted from Birdman and Spider-Man: Homecoming to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Knox Goes Away, and The Whisper Man. Shannon moved from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman to The Bikeriders, A Different Man, and Nuremberg. The timeline suggests momentum, but the films did not cause the pivot. They simply filled the gaps.
