What kind of watch this is
Director Jon Watts takes the unmasking twist and runs with it. When Peter Parker asks Doctor Strange for help, he does not get a simple fix. He gets a multiverse. The 148-minute runtime is a warning label, but the film earns it by turning a superhero movie into a disaster movie about identity. The tone shifts from quippy to desperate quickly. It is less about saving the world and more about saving your own life from your own fame. It works because the stakes feel personal, not planetary.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 93% approval rating as of July 2026. Metacritic sits at 71, which translates to generally favorable. The critical consensus calls it a bigger, bolder sequel that keeps its humor and heart. IGN’s Amelia Emberwing found the emotional beats felt earned. Variety’s Peter Debruge noted it provides enough resolution for two decades of adventures to reward those who stuck around. The audience vote was less nuanced. CinemaScore gave it an A+, a rare grade for a live-action Spider-Man film. It is a movie that treats its own history as a puzzle piece, which is either a stroke of genius or a very long time to wait for a simple answer.
How it did with audiences
It cost $200 million and took in $1.9 billion worldwide. In the United States, that figure was $814 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.9 out of 10. The numbers are loud enough to drown out the noise.
