What kind of watch this is
James Gunn’s 2025 film runs 130 minutes and treats the most powerful being on Earth as a man trying to keep two jobs from colliding. The tone is lighter than you might expect for a character with that much gravity. David Corenswet plays the part with a quiet confidence that makes the spectacle feel grounded. It is a story about looking up, which is a tall order for a movie that spends most of its time on the ground.

Critics called it fun, colorful, and earnest, though some found it overstuffed. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 83% Tomatometer score as of August 2026, based on 505 reviews. Metacritic’s Metascore sits at 68 out of 100 as of February 2026, signaling generally favorable reception. Rotten Tomatoes also lists an average review score of 7.2 out of 10.
The consensus notes the film flies high by grounding its champion in the present. IGN rated it 8/10, calling it wonderfully entertaining and heartfelt. Not everyone bought the enthusiasm. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave it 2 stars, criticizing its pointless backstory and CGI finale.
How it did with audiences
It spent $225 million and took in $619 million, a margin that keeps the accountants smiling and the shareholders nodding. On TMDB, users give it a 7.3 out of 10, a score that suggests the cape landed with a thud rather than a crash. It’s the kind of number that makes a producer buy a very nice tie.
