What kind of watch this is

Matt Shakman directs 115 minutes of retro-futuristic spectacle where the family bond is the actual plot point. The backdrop is a vibrant 1960s-inspired world, but the tension comes from Reed, Sue, and Ben trying to be heroes without falling apart. Galactus and the Silver Surfer provide the external threat, yet the real danger is internal. It is a movie about a unit under pressure, set against a cosmic backdrop. The stakes are global, but the emotional core is domestic.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 86% as of March 2026, a number that feels earned given the chemistry. Metacritic is more reserved, landing on a 65 out of 100 in October 2025, which it labels generally favorable. The consensus leans on the retro design and cast synergy. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it an "entertaining spectacle" with a "hallucinatory" 1960s aesthetic. Not everyone bought the magic, though. Esther Zuckerman of Bloomberg News noted the film still carries a "halo of cobwebs" it cannot quite shake off.

How it did with audiences

A $200 million budget usually means a studio is betting big, but $521.9 million worldwide suggests the math worked out. It opened with $117.6 million in the US and Canada, a strong start that only looked impressive until Superman had already set the bar higher. The drop-off was steep, though; an 80% decline on the second Friday signaled that casual fans showed up for the spectacle, not the sequel. On TMDB, users give it a 6.9, a number that feels honest for a film that relied on nostalgia to drive ticket sales.
