What kind of watch this is
Sam Raimi directed this 2002 action film, which runs 121 minutes. Tobey Maguire plays Peter Parker, a high school student who gains powers after a spider bite. The tone is earnest, unironic, and surprisingly grounded for a story about web-slinging. It treats the mythology with a sincerity that feels almost quaint today. It is a film that believes in its own hero. That belief is the whole point.
What the critics said
Critics mostly liked it, though the numbers tell a slightly different story over time. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 90% as of August 2024, while its average review score from October 2021 is 7.6 out of 10. Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, lands on 73 out of 100 as of June 2025. That’s solidly favorable territory.
Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal praised Tobey Maguire but found Willem Dafoe’s performance too strident. He compared the villain unfavorably to Jack Nicholson’s Batman. Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter liked the upside-down kiss. It was a good moment, even if the rest of the film leaned a bit hard on spectacle.
How it did with audiences
It cost $139 million and took $825 million worldwide. The domestic haul hit $407 million. That gap between spend and return reads as a quiet victory in accounting terms. Audiences voted with their wallets, though the numbers do the shouting.
