Kemp Powers directs it like a fever dream, asking whether saving the world requires sacrificing your own identity. It is loud, colorful, and deeply anxious.
What the critics said
Critics agreed the visuals were a breakthrough. Rotten Tomatoes tallied a 95% positive score as of January 2024, with an average rating of 8.6. Metacritic landed on 86 out of 100 by November 2024, a number it interprets as universal acclaim. Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post called it an extravagant love letter to graphic design. Kyle Smith of The Wall Street Journal noted the film was visually hypercaffeinated, though the first half plot moved slowly.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $100 million and took in $690.8 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin for an animated blockbuster. On TMDB, users rate it 8.3 out of 10. The math checks out, even if the multiverse remains slightly harder to verify.
