What kind of watch this is
Wes Craven moves the Ghostface massacre from a small town to the bright, cynical lights of Hollywood. The killer is now hunting on the set of STAB 3, a movie about the very murders that started it all. It is a horror film that is also a sharp satire of celebrity culture. The survivors are in the spotlight, which makes them easier targets and harder to save. The tone is self-aware without becoming a parody. It leans into the absurdity of the premise while keeping the stakes deadly serious. You are watching a slasher that knows it is a franchise. The meta-humor lands because the danger feels real. The final scream is the loudest one.
What the critics said
The reviews landed in the middle, which is usually where sequels go when the first half was a hit. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 41% approval rating in October 2024. Metacritic gave it a 56 out of 100 in August 2025, a score that signals mixed or average reception. Roger Ebert noted the characters were "so thin, they're transparent," a diagnosis that fits the whole film. The Los Angeles Times countered that it was "genuinely scary and also highly amusing." Those two views sit on the same shelf. One sees a hollow shell; the other sees a fun ride.
What came next for the cast
Before Scream 3, Neve Campbell had Scream and Scream 2 under her belt. David Arquette shared those same two credits. Courteney Cox added Friends to the mix. Parker Posey was busy with You've Got Mail and Dazed and Confused. The film itself did not dictate their next moves. What followed was a scattered map. Campbell returned for Scream 4 in 2011 and Scream in 2022. Arquette joined Scream 4 and Scream, plus Bone Tomahawk in 2015. Cox appeared in Scream 4, Scream, and Scream VI in 2023. Posey drifted toward Superman Returns, Blade: Trinity, and Café Society. The credits do not say the film caused that shift. They just list what came next.
