Matt Bettinelli-Olpin directs a 123-minute film that strips away the small-town setting to test whether these characters can function outside their trauma. The tagline promises new rules, and the film delivers on that by treating the urban landscape as a new kind of maze. It is less about the jump scares and more about the exhaustion of being a survivor. If you want a slasher that asks what happens after the final scene, this is the one.
What the critics said
Critics found the franchise holding up, mostly. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 76% Tomatometer score in June 2023, while Metacritic landed on a 61 Metascore by June 2025. The consensus is that the new setting keeps things reasonably sharp. Richard Roeper called it a "wickedly funny" Scream-fest that defies logic. It is a solid entry for fans who enjoy a shell game, even if the logic is loose.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $35 million and took in $116 million. Deadline Hollywood calculated a net profit of $60 million, which makes for a tidy return on investment. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10, a score that suggests audiences enjoyed the ride but perhaps not the destination. The numbers do the talking here, and they are polite.

Jenna Ortega arrived with Iron Man 3 and Wednesday in her back pocket. She left with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Miller's Girl, and Death of a Unicorn stacked on the shelf. Melissa Barrera traded In the Heights for Abigail. Mason Gooding swapped Fall for Heart Eyes and 72 HOURS. Jasmin Savoy Brown kept her Scream momentum alive with Scream 7 and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The timeline suggests momentum, not causation.
