What kind of watch this is

Ghostface returns. That is the hook. Twenty-five years after the original Woodsboro murders, a new killer in the same mask picks off a new generation of teenagers, dragging the town’s buried secrets back into the light. It is a 114-minute horror mystery. The script knows its audience knows the rules. It plays with the audience’s memory of the franchise as much as it plays with the characters’ fear. It is a film that respects the past enough to let it haunt the present.

What the critics said

Critics found the franchise working harder than ever to maintain its meta edge, succeeding surprisingly often. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 76% approval rating as of November 2022, based on 300 reviews. Metacritic lists a 60/100 Metascore as of October 2025, signaling mixed or average reception. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune placed the film halfway between the pretty-good 2018 Halloween and its turgid follow-up. Not everyone agreed. Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times called the entry wearyingly repetitive and entirely fright-free. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a B+, while PostTrak users rated it 79% positive. The cast’s work, particularly Campbell’s, drew specific praise.

How it did with audiences

Scream cost $24 million and took in $140 million worldwide. That is a comfortable margin, and Deadline Hollywood estimated a net profit of $56.7 million after all expenses. Audiences rated it 6.7 on TMDB. It was the first film to dethrone Spider-Man: No Way Home at the box office. The arithmetic worked out, even if the drop-off in the second weekend was steep.
