What kind of watch this is
The premise is simple: a woman wakes up in a secret facility, then spends the next 95 minutes fighting her way through Tokyo, New York, Washington D.C., and Moscow. It is not a subtle entry in the action-horror genre. It is loud, fast, and committed to the bit. Paul W. S. Anderson directs, and Milla Jovovich plays Alice, a character who treats urban warfare as a personal inconvenience rather than a global apocalypse. The tone is pure spectacle. If you want zombies to look tired before they look dead, press play.
What the critics said
Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes assigns a 28% Tomatometer score, based on 74 reviews as of November 2024, alongside a 4.3/10 average rating from September 2021. Metacritic lands on 39 out of 100 from 17 critics, a range that signals generally unfavorable reception. The consensus describes the film as "stylishly hollow." One exception: Clark Collis of Entertainment Weekly called the direction "lunatically haphazard and dementedly enthusiastic." The audience, meanwhile, polled at a C+, which is at least honest.
How it did with audiences
The budget hit $65 million, and the film took in $240 million. That is a solid return on investment, or at least a reasonable one if you ignore the critical reception. On TMDB, users give it a 5.8.
What came next for the cast
Milla Jovovich, who started with The Fifth Element and the first Resident Evil, kept going with the franchise through The Final Chapter and then pivoted to Monster Hunter and Hellboy. Michelle Rodriguez, known for The Fast and the Furious and Avatar, returned to the fast cars in Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, and The Fate of the Furious. Sienna Guillory, seen in Love Actually and Resident Evil: Apocalypse, moved on to High-Rise, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Meg 2: The Trench. The credits list these works, but they cannot prove this film caused the shift.
