What kind of watch this is

Resident Evil: Apocalypse is a 94-minute horror action film where the quarantine zone becomes a death trap. It strips away the cozy familiarity of the first movie, leaving only the frantic sprint for survival. The tone is less about creeping dread and more about the sheer, exhausting volume of things trying to kill you. Milla Jovovich runs, jumps, and fights through a city that has turned against itself. It is pure, unapologetic kinetic energy. If you want zombies that feel like a weather event, this is your ticket.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes records a 19% approval rating as of August 2024, with an average score of 3.9/10 from 130 critics. Metacritic lists a 36/100 Metascore from 26 reviews, a category it labels generally unfavorable. The consensus notes the film has lots of action but lacks plot or creativity. Roger Ebert called it an utterly meaningless waste of time, ranking it the eighth worst film of 2004. Not everyone agreed. Dave Kehr of The New York Times praised the screenplay and direction, finding the visceral impact highly satisfying. The bad news, as M. E. Russell put it, is that the movie is monumentally stupid. The good news is that it is a fun kind of stupid.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $43 million. The worldwide take was $129 million. In film arithmetic, that is a solid return; in any other industry, it is a profitable quarter. On TMDB, users give it a 6.4 out of 10.

Where it left its mark

Time named it one of the ten worst video game adaptations in 2009. Their reasoning was simple: it enabled further sequels to be considered. That logic holds up, even if the premise does not. By 2016, Bloody Disgusting writers called it both the best and worst entry in the series. Michael Nordine of TheWrap picked it as the worst in 2017, citing its expansion of the franchise and an "awesomely stupid" fight with Nemesis.
