What kind of watch this is

Resident Evil: Afterlife is a 97-minute action horror film where the apocalypse has become a commute. Milla Jovovich plays Alice, who fights through a Los Angeles overrun by thousands of Undead while trying to lead survivors to safety. It is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and it leans hard into the absurdity of the premise. The stakes are high, the zombies are plentiful, and the special effects do most of the talking. It is a loud, kinetic spectacle that treats global destruction as a Tuesday.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes records a 21% Tomatometer score based on 107 reviews, alongside a 4.1/10 average rating. Metacritic assigns a 37/100 Metascore from 14 reviews, categorizing the reception as generally unfavorable. The consensus is blunt: the film is as dim-witted as its undead antagonists. Not everyone agreed. Michael Ordoña of the Los Angeles Times found the action easier to read than most in the genre, noting the director wrings more bang for the stereoscopic buck. Phelim O'Neill of The Guardian praised the 3D but argued the franchise lacks one iota of originality. Brian Orndorf of Dark Horizons called it the first 3D picture to simulate watching paint dry.

How it did with audiences

Resident Evil: Afterlife spent $60 million to earn $300 million worldwide. In film terms, that is a solid haul. TMDB users give it a 6.1 out of 10. The numbers are fine, even if the enthusiasm was lukewarm.

What came next for the cast

Milla Jovovich was already deep in the franchise, having starred in The Fifth Element and Resident Evil. After Afterlife, she returned for Resident Evil: Retribution before stepping into Monster Hunter. That is a lot of zombies to run from. Ali Larter came from Final Destination and Final Destination 2. She eventually landed in The Rookie, a very different kind of survival. Kim Coates had high-profile parts in Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. He later appeared in Fantasy Island, where the stakes dropped considerably. The credits do not say Afterlife caused these shifts. They just list what followed.
