What kind of watch this is
Jeremy Slater’s 2022 series leans into the disorientation of its premise, where a gift shop worker wakes up with the muscle memory of a mercenary. Oscar Isaac plays both sides, and the show trusts the audience to keep up with the identity shift. It is 53 minutes per episode across 6 episodes, totaling roughly 5 hours of viewing. The pacing is brisk, the action is stylized, and the mystery of the Egyptian gods provides a mythic backdrop to a very personal psychological unraveling. It is a tight, self-contained package that respects your time.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports an 86% approval rating based on 240 reviews, averaging 7.65 out of 10. Metacritic scores it 69 out of 100, a weighted average from 27 critics that signals generally favorable reception. The consensus notes the series settles into a mostly enjoyable and refreshingly weird spot in the MCU. Matt Webb Mitovich of TVLine gave the first four episodes an A−, praising how they subvert tempered expectations. James Dyer of Empire called it a boldly bonkers affair that feels genuinely different, though he noted the larger narrative is sometimes less compelling than the character work.
Dissent exists. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter found it more successful as an acting exercise than a thrill-ride. He appreciated the culturally appropriate depictions of Egypt, even if the plot felt like an explanation for why viewers would want to watch the character eventually.
What came next for the cast
Before 2022, Ethan Hawke was known for Dead Poets Society and The Purge. Afterward came Leave the World Behind, Black Phone 2, and Strange Way of Life. The credits do not claim the series triggered that shift. They just list what happened. Oscar Isaac enters from Star Wars and exits toward Frankenstein and BEEF. One trajectory climbs, the other persists. The timeline is a map, not a cause.
