Brian Lowry of CNN argued the series successfully explored the tension of Wilson taking up the shield. Not everyone was convinced. Brian Tallerico of Vulture called it flawed but fun, noting it often felt rushed and lacked depth in its analysis of race and power. The pacing, specifically the weekly release schedule, drew further criticism.

TMDB users give it a 7.6 out of 10. On Disney+, the premiere episode "New World Order" became the most-watched series launch in the platform's history during its opening weekend in March 2021. It edged out both WandaVision and the second season of The Mandalorian. Samba TV reported that 1.7 million households tuned in for that debut. By April, TVision counted it as the most-viewed series across measured platforms. It was seen nearly 40 times more than the average show. TorrentFreak later ranked it the fourth-most pirated series of the year. High demand, it seems, often comes with a price tag.
