What kind of watch this is

The Defenders is a 2017 series that trades cosmic spectacle for wet, gritty street-level crime. It runs 8 episodes, totaling roughly 7 hours of screen time. That is a manageable evening block for a show that feels like a long, slow argument about who gets to save New York. The tone leans on the specific strengths of its leads: Matt Murdock’s legal rigor, Jessica Jones’ cynicism, Luke Cage’s physical presence, and Iron Fist’s awkward mysticism. It is less about the heroes flying and more about them getting punched in a subway tunnel. If you liked the solo series but wanted them to stop talking at each other, this is the logical next step.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 78% approval rating, averaging 6.60 out of 10. Metacritic sits at 63, signaling generally favorable reviews. The critical consensus suggests the action packs enough punch to offset the flaws. Tracy Brown of the Los Angeles Times noted forward progress in the narratives, even when the heroes barely interact. Julia Alexander of Polygon was "stupidly excited" to binge the rest. Not everyone was thrilled. Dan Jolin of Empire gave it 3 out of 5 stars, finding enough joy in the interactions but disappointed the story failed to up the ante. He called Alexandra "yet another businessperson baddie." The audience, however, was clearly on board, applauding throughout the early screening.

How it did with audiences

On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. Netflix never reveals subscriber counts, so the numbers come from outside. Jumpshot found the series garnered 17% of the viewers the second season of Daredevil received in its first 30 days. That made it the least-viewed of the Marvel Netflix series. Viewership dropped by 67%, 48%, and 41% over the 30-day period. It was the third-most "Binge Raced" series globally and first in South Korea. Nielsen reported 2.8 million viewers on release day. The speed was notable; the longevity was not.

What came next for the cast

Charlie Cox moved from Daredevil to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Krysten Ritter returned to the Breaking Bad universe in El Camino. Finn Jones traded Game of Thrones for Dickinson. The credits do not prove the 2017 series caused these turns, but they map the paths taken afterward.
