A character drama based on the 2001 Elmore Leonard short story "Fire in the Hole." Leonard's tale centers around U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens of Kentucky, a quiet but strong-willed official of the law. The tale covers his high-stakes job, as well as his strained relationships with his ex-wife and father.

Rotten Tomatoes consensus for the first season highlights a "seductive look" and Olyphant’s "note-perfect" performance. Matt Roush of TV Guide praised Olyphant’s "low-key but high-impact" work. Not everyone was won over. Mike Hale of The New York Times noted the show’s "modest virtues" but felt the first season’s crisis points drifted past without much impression.
