Animal Kingdom (2016)
Family ’til the end.
17-year-old Joshua "J" Cody moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Headed by boot-tough matriarch Janine "Smurf" Cody and her right-hand Baz, who runs the business and calls the shots, the clan also consists of Pope, the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody boys; Craig, the tough and fearless middle son; and Deran, the troubled, suspicious "baby" of the family.

What kind of watch this is
The Codys do not behave like a family; they behave like a cartel with a family tree. Jonathan Lisco built this 6-season crime drama around the friction between a teenager’s moral compass and a matriarch’s iron grip on a Southern California beach town. Smurf runs the house, Baz runs the business, and the three sons each hold a different piece of the knife. It is 63 hours of watching people who love each other deeply and hate each other profoundly, usually at the same time. The tagline says family until the end, but the show spends 63 hours proving how quickly that bond can become a noose.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season a 76% approval rating based on 33 reviews. The consensus calls it "a darkly intriguing, although occasionally predictable, twisted family drama," which is a polite way of saying the plot twists hit like a freight train you saw coming. Metacritic lands on 65 out of 100 from 27 critics, a score that indicates generally favorable reviews.
How it did with audiences
No box office figures exist for this film, so we cannot claim it broke even or made a killing. The money talk is absent, leaving only the audience verdict to stand in for the receipts. On TMDB, users rate it 7.8 out of 10. It is a rare case where the only number that matters is the one that measures enjoyment, not profit.
What came next for the cast
Shawn Hatosy moved from Public Enemies and John Q to The Pitt and a 2026 release. Jake Weary stepped out of It Follows and Zombeavers into It Chapter Two, Trigger Warning, and Message from the King. Finn Cole left Peaky Blinders behind to appear in F9, Slaughterhouse Rulez, and Last Breath. The credits list what followed, not why. Sometimes a film is just a door, not a map.
