What kind of watch this is
Steven Spielberg directs this 127-minute science fiction adventure, where a theme park for living dinosaurs fails on its opening day. The security systems go off-line, and the creatures escape. The hook is the tension between the promise of wonder and the reality of chaos. It asks what happens when we build a cage for something that was never meant to be caged. The answer is loud, dangerous, and very specific to 1993.
What the critics said
Critics agreed on the dinosaurs, then split on the humans. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 92% Tomatometer score, while Metacritic sits at 68 out of 100. Janet Maslin of The New York Times called it "a true movie milestone." Peter Travers in Rolling Stone found the characters "dry bones." Roger Ebert, giving three stars, wanted more awe and strong human values.
How it did with audiences
Budget $63 million, take $1.0 billion worldwide. In the US, it pulled $404 million. On TMDB, users rate it 8 out of 10. The numbers are not just high; they are structural. Spielberg’s previous record holder, E.T., got dethroned on the global chart.
Awards
Three Academy Awards, all for the technical side of things. Gary Rydstrom took Best Sound Editing, Gary Summers Best Sound, and Dennis Muren Best Visual Effects. The rest of the night went to other movies, which is standard. Seven wins total, including the Saturn for Best Science Fiction Film. The dinosaurs ate well that year.
What came next for the cast
Sam Neill moved from a submarine thriller to a crime drama. Jeff Goldblum swapped a fly transformation for a hotel mystery. Laura Dern left a cult series for a space saga. The credits list these shifts, but they do not prove the dinosaur caused them. They simply mark where the road went next.
Where it left its mark
Critics and industry figures frequently rank Jurassic Park among the most influential films ever made. The American Film Institute placed it 35th on its list of thrilling movies in 2001. Empire magazine later called it the sixth most influential film of its 15-year run. In 2018, the Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry, citing its cultural and aesthetic significance. It also appears on lists by The Guardian and in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. The consensus is loud, though the dinosaurs did most of the heavy lifting.
