What kind of watch this is
The park is gone. That is the whole hook. Isla Nublar sits empty, its dinosaurs left to their own devices until a dormant volcano decides to wake up. It is a disaster movie wearing a dinosaur costume. J. A. Bayona directs it. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return for the rescue mission, while Rafe Spall plays Eli Mills. The tone is urgent. It does not linger on the science. It focuses on the chaos of saving animals from an extinction-level event. The tagline does the heavy lifting.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes lists a 46% Tomatometer score as of August 2024. That is a cool, lukewarm place for a dinosaur movie to live. Metacritic sits at 51, which signals mixed or average reception. The consensus leans on the spectacle, not the script. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called it a so-so ride. He wanted the next one to be great. This is the kind of film that works for the eye but not the brain.
How it did with audiences
The production budget hit $170 million, but total expenses pushed closer to $464.5 million. It pulled in $418 million in the United States and $1.3 billion worldwide. That made it the 35th film ever to cross the $1 billion mark. Audiences clearly wanted their dinosaurs back, even if the plot required a bit of a stretch to get there.
What came next for the cast
Chris Pratt was already a star thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy. He returned to the franchise for Vol. 2 in 2017, then jumped to Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Bryce Dallas Howard had done Jurassic World in 2015 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007. She followed this with Rocketman in 2019 and Jurassic World Dominion in 2022. Rafe Spall had appeared in Life of Pi and Prometheus in 2012. He moved into Men in Black: International and Just Mercy in 2019. The credits list what they did next. They do not prove this film caused it.
