What kind of watch this is

Ang Lee took a comic book smash-and-dash and turned it into a slow-burn character study about a man who cannot stop his own biology. At 138 minutes, it lingers on the quiet moments between explosions, treating the transformation less as a monster movie and more as a psychological crisis. Eric Bana plays Bruce Banner not as a superhero, but as a man trapped in a body that reacts to every suppressed emotion. The film asks what happens when repression breaks, and it does not rush the answer. It is a strange, bruising piece of cinema that feels more like a drama than a blockbuster.

What the critics said

Critics were divided, leaning slightly toward approval. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 63% approval rating as of October 2023, based on 237 reviews. Metacritic gives it a 54 out of 100, indicating mixed or average reception. Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun-Times liked the ambition, noting Ang Lee tried to deal with the story's issues rather than cutting to brainless visual effects. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praised the action but wished the film were shorter. The consensus agrees: there is too much talking and not enough smashing.

How it did with audiences

Hulk cost $137 million and grossed $245 million worldwide. That is a margin thin enough to make an accountant wince. It opened strong, though. $62.1 million in its first weekend made it the 16th-highest opener at the time, beating out Finding Nemo. It also scored the biggest June opening weekend. On TMDB, users rate it 5.6 out of 10. Audiences loved the green giant; the spreadsheet did not.
