What kind of watch this is

Matt Reeves directs this 130-minute sci-fi thriller where a plague is wiping out humanity in San Francisco, forcing a group of scientists to struggle to stay alive while Caesar tries to maintain dominance over his community of intelligent apes. The hook is not the zombies or the action; it is the tense, quiet standoff between two species trying to figure out if they can share a planet. Jason Clarke plays the human side, while Toby Kebbell brings a dangerous, personal vendetta to the table. It is a film that asks a simple question: when power shifts, who gets to decide what “human” means?

What the critics said

Critics treated the sequel with unusual respect. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 91% approval rating from 316 reviews, while Metacritic assigns a 79 out of 100. Guy Lodge of Variety called it an "altogether smashing sequel," noting it bests its predecessor. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter compared it to The Empire Strikes Back, arguing the second entry is significantly better than the first. Andrew O'Hehir of Salon offered a dissenting view, suggesting a rule about such films that the snippet cuts off before fully explaining.

How it did with audiences

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes pulled in $711 million worldwide, a figure that Deadline Hollywood calculated as a net profit of $182.18 million. It opened with $103.3 million, the 11th highest of 2014, and beat its predecessor’s debut by 33%. Critics called it the summer’s best popcorn film, while Deadline noted the franchise would keep going unless they screwed it up. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10.
