What kind of watch this is
Gravity strips the space genre down to its barest, most terrifying mechanics. Alfonso Cuarón directs the 91-minute film, a science fiction thriller that behaves less like a blockbuster and more like a sustained panic attack. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in the film, which features a tagline that reads, "Don't let go." The film trusts its visual design to do the heavy lifting, leaving the viewer suspended in a silent, star-filled void where the only sound is the hum of failing machinery.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes holds a 96% approval rating as of 2022, backed by 362 reviews. Metacritic sits at 96 out of 100 as of 2025, a score that lands in the "universal acclaim" territory. It was the second-highest scoring widely released film of its year. The consensus calls it eerie, tense, and visually stunning.
Matt Zoller Seitz found the space panoramas "informative and lovely". A. O. Scott argued it rewrites the rules of cinema.
How it did with audiences
It cost $100 million and took in $723 million worldwide. On TMDB, users rate it 7.2 out of 10. IMDb audiences scored it 7.7/10 as of March 2026. For Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, it was the biggest box office hit of their careers, surpassing Speed and Ocean's Eleven. The math was simple: people paid to see a woman float in the dark, and they paid in 3D.
Awards
Gravity collected 13 awards across its career. At the 86th Academy Awards, it shared the top nomination count with American Hustle, taking 10 nods. It converted 7 of those into wins, including Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón and Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki. That tally makes it the most Oscar-awarded film of the 2010s, trailing only Cabaret in wins without a Best Picture crown.
What came next for the cast
Before 2013, Sandra Bullock was known for The Proposal and Speed. Afterward, she starred in Bird Box, Ocean's Eight, and Bullet Train. George Clooney had just wrapped the Ocean’s franchises, then moved into Tomorrowland, Hail, Caesar!, and The Monuments Men. Ed Harris, fresh from The Truman Show and A Beautiful Mind, shifted to Top Gun: Maverick, mother!, and Westworld. The credits cannot say Gravity caused that shift. They only mark the timeline.
